Apple Pie Recipe

I've been making apple pies lately. Yes, I'm going through this again. A few years ago I got on a pie kick and my family and friends gifted me with awesome tools for construction. Recently, a friend hooked me up with a ton of apples off his tree. I had the tools, I had the goods, and before I knew it, the pie frenzy had began.

Here is my recipe. My pie crust recipe is my grandmother's. It's by far the best part of the pie and I'll have to check with Grandma Renzelman before I post the recipe...

Mel's Apple Pie (Approximately because I don't really measure things anymore.)

6 cups of apples sliced and peeled (or enough apples to fill your pie fully)
1/4 white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 butter (softened)
dash of salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 T cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 cup half and half
1 T corn starch

Core, peel and slice the apples. This will be the most time consuming part of the pie assembly. I recommend purchasing an apple corer and using a potato peeler to peel the apples. It's what works for me the quickest, but experience is the best tool so start practicing.

Add the cornstarch to the half and half and mix well before adding to apple mixture. Combine all the rest of the ingredients and place into prepared pie crust. Top apple pie with crust, I prefer the lattice method for apple pies, brush with egg and water mixture and bake at 400 degrees for approx 1 hour or until crust is golden-brown.
