Patrick has a subluxed middle finger, I'm not sure if this is the right way to describe it but it means the knuckle on his hand pops out of joint and pops back in when he throws the shot put. It's very painful. This began during the early stages of the indoor season. At conference in MONTANA it was giving him a lot of pain. He basically stopped throwing shot after all this.
He threw once at the Jack Christensen Invite and qualified for conference championships, since it was his last. He almost didn't throw the shot there because he wanted to concentrate on discus and hammer. He threw to make sure he didn't get in trouble because of the fair effort rules at conference (which I will not get into detail about here because it would take much too much to explain)During warm-ups he "felt pretty good" and threw the first 53'9 which almost matched his outdoor personal record. Which each throw he experienced more and more pain and didn't know if he should keep going after it. After each throw of finals he looked over and gave me the I'm done, I'm shutting it down." signal. Each time he decided last minute to go for it, "because it just didn't feel right to be in the ring and not go for it." (Remember he still had hammer and discus to throw)
He set an All-time personal record by OVER A FOOT at 55' 3 3/4" on his sixth and final throw. This throw lost to second place by 1 cm and moved him to 51st in the NCAA west. It earned him All-Conference honors and a special kind of honor to know he brought his best on his last competition in the shot put, which few achieve.
Most likely he will not get to go to Austin for the NCAA first round, and I'm certainly disappointed, but I am honored to have been Patrick's coach for the last four years. What a great competitor and leader. UNC (and his coach) will definitely miss him!
College athletics come and go in the blink of an eye, yet the work ethic, competitive spirit, and dedication to goals that stays with us for a lifetime. It's not about a medal that hangs on your wall, it's about what that medal represents. It's not the outcome that defines us, it's the process. BUT to be completely honest, glory is what comes when the outcome matches the process. Patrick did that this weekend.
To sum up his last month, he has bought a house, graduated college, got engaged, set multiple personal records in track and field and earned All-Conference. Most people would crumble under that much stress. Patrick THRIVED.

Update on Northern Colorado Track and Field
As our season is drawing to a close we are watching standings (both in the big sky and in the NCAA West) very closely.
Patrick Berg set a new personal record in the discus on Saturday and moved himself into 57th place in the NCAA West. As of today he has hit a 50.93m (167'1) and needs to hit a 51.69m (169'7) to move into 48th. It's a very competitive discus field, and I expect that 48th will only get tougher in the last few weeks.
Berg is ranked 3rd in the Big Sky in discus and his teammate Sean Conlin is currently ranked 11th.
Also many congratulations to Berg who got engaged last weekend as well!
On the women's side, Meaghan Green has dropped to 40th in the NCAA West but hopefully will still be able to clinch one last trip her senior year to the first round of NCAA Championships.

Meaghan Green Currently Ranked 39th in NCAA West.
This year track and field has changed its Championships a bit. When I was in school they implemented a regional championship meet and divided the nation into 4 regions. This year they have changed things so that there is a "first round" of NCAA National Championships.
To qualify athletes must place in the top 48 in their area (east or west)
Northern Colorado athlete Meaghan Green is currently ranked 38th in the women's hammer with a mark of 180'3. It's a pretty competitive field and I'm hoping she stays in the top 48.
Patrick Berg is currently ranked 80th in discus but to put things into perspective for men's discus there are 39 people ahead of him within 10 feet, so that's really a free for all.

Rams Legend Weekend
This weekend CSU hosted it's first annual Ram's Legends weekend at the Jack Christensen Track meet. I've been waiting for this for a few years now.
Track and Field has shaped my life tremendously. Through-out EVERYDAY of my college career to EVERYDAY of my professional life, I have been involved with track and field and I know what wonderful opportunities I've had.
I was absolutely giddy to find out I was still in the top ten of CSU history and while looking over the top ten records in all of the throwing events I was reminded of what wonderful company I had on my team. Including of course one of my best buddies, Loree Smith, who came back to make a throwing appearance this weekend.

Pictures from Montana Indoor Conference Championships Trip
Here are some pictures from our Indoor Conference Championships. Patrick placed 5th in both shot and the weight throw. Meaghan placed third in a very salty weight competition and also earned All-Conference honors.
Outdoor Begins
Today is the UNC throwers offical first day of outdoor track. After a beautiful weekend of course the weather has turned for the worse and I'll be freezing outside this afternoon, but I think it will good to get outside and out of the craziness of the gym.
I gave my athletes the week off last week as a short break before the outdoor season began since we will compete through the end of May. This also gave me a much needed break to get some of my homework done and also get caught up on grading and laundry.

Results from Potts Invite at Boulder
At the bears first (and very early) meet of the outdoor season. The throw crew performed fairly well.
Charlie Smith had an excellent meet with two new personal records in the hammer and the discus.
We had two throwers qualify for Big Sky Conference Championships this weekend. Meaghan Green qualified in shotput as well as discus and Patrick Berg qualified in the discus.
Meaghan is getting closer to the Regional Qualifying mark in the discus as well.

Charlie Smith had an excellent meet with two new personal records in the hammer and the discus.
We had two throwers qualify for Big Sky Conference Championships this weekend. Meaghan Green qualified in shotput as well as discus and Patrick Berg qualified in the discus.
Meaghan is getting closer to the Regional Qualifying mark in the discus as well.

Northern Colorado Women's Walk for Women's Athletic Scholoarships
On April 18 I will be participating in a Women's Walk for Women's Athletic Scholarships. They are asking each participant to raise $50 dollars with at least a goal of $100. My goal is $500.00.

Flagstaff Recap
Last weekend UNC Track and Field competed at Northern Arizona University for the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships.
I was proud of Meaghan who placed second in the weight and earned All-Conference for her performance. Patrick also placed seventh in the shotput. While dreams of a NCAA birth for Meaghan didn't quite transpire, All-Conference is a pretty remarkable accomplishment. Meaghan has had a great couple weeks. Last week she earned Conference Athlete of the Week, this week All-Conference.
These trips are great. Its fun to think its my job to fly with 25 athletes to Arizona, get a per diem, and watch one of my favorite sports. Its a little more stressful than that (ever try to rent 3 vans from Budget...ugh...what about parrallel park one of these vans?) but its still great. I love my job.

Green's Chasing the Provisional Mark
One of the most exciting and beloved things in my life is Track and Field. One of the athletes I coach, Meaghan Green has been relentlessly pursueing a provisional qualifiying mark for the NCAA Championships.
The provisional mark is 18.75. This past Friday she set a new personal (and school record) by throwing 18.23 meters.
As we head into our Conference Championships at Flagstaff. I'm pumped for her opportunity! Go Meaghan!
